Yorkshire 3 Peaks

About

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of the UK’s great outdoor challenges. The route from the chosen starting point covers a distance of approximately 23.5 miles (37km) and takes in 5,000ft (1,530m) of ascent. It is a circular route that can be completed in either direction from various starting points, the most popular being Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The challenge is to complete the circuit back to the starting point in under 12 hours.

Where

Found in the outstanding beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough are summited in a circuit to make up the challenge.

When

We can organise and run your bespoke challenge from April to October. This allows us to make the most of daylight hours and hopefully enjoy fine weather.

Who is it for?

The challenge is regularly undertaken by charity fundraising groups, corporate groups and people wanting to enjoy the satisfaction of completing a personal challenge and all whilst immersing themselves in the great outdoors.

Will I enjoy it?

Taking in the scenery of the Yorkshire Dales this is a hugely satisfying challenge to complete.Weather permitting, views over the Yorkshire Dales, Howgill Fells, Lake District and as far as Morecambe Bay can be enjoyed. This popular challenge is often a gateway into the outdoors and leads to the undertaking of further challenges and the appreciation of the benefits that can be gained by spending time in the outdoor environment.

Terrain

The route has benefitted from a huge amount of investment from the Yorkshire Dale National Parks Authority which has rerouted and resurfaced many sections of the route to protect the surrounding environment.Whist many sections are on good surfaces of flagstone, gravel, tarmac and stone stepped there are sections of grassy paths and muddy descents waiting to trip the unwary. The route has three ascents (obviously!), which also means there are three descents which is where people often find they have underestimated the challenge.

Requirements

Have no doubt that although the route holds no technical mountaineering difficulties, this can be a long and demanding day and should not be underestimated. Walking twenty-three miles including three hill ascents and descents demand a respectable level of fitness, endurance and preparation. The better the preparation, the more enjoyable the day will be.

Environmental considerations

Your Mountain Challenge supports the UK National Parks recognition of the positive benefits that can be gained by people joining an organised recreational event and experiencing the outstanding natural beauty of these landscapes. Your Mountain Challenge also appreciates that whilst we are keen to help people enjoy these areas the upmost care should be taken to minimise any negative impact to the environment or disruption to the local communities. As such we will make a donation to the Three Peaks Project on behalf of every individual participating in our events.

We will where possible seek to run events on less busy dates and encourage challenge participants to use local businesses and support the area economically to offset any disturbance. We ask every participant to complete their challenge without leaving any trace on the landscape other than footprints and to also remove at least 1 piece of litter each for responsible disposal.
